Stellum MGP Bourbon Barrel pick Zodram!

This whiskey is a collaboration between Barrell Craft Spirits and Jews & Booze. Barrell Craft Spirits (Louisville, Kentucky) is an independent blender and bottler of whiskeys and rums. They have a newer line called Stellum that is created with the same approach as their main line, but at a more affordable price point.

Jews and Booze is a private group of Jewish premium spirits enthusiasts. They say “Jews and Booze was created to embrace community and the light-hearted, “schticky” side of life that good whiskey and spirits are meant to celebrate. Jews and Booze puts the SIMCHA (happiness) in spirits… It has grown into a worldwide brand and community that does exclusive barrel picks, private label bottling, and one-of-a-kind parties and events.

We’ve reviewed some BCS whiskeys before – A range of Barrell Craft Spirits bourbons and whiskeys.

Today we’re tasting a single barrel pick nicknamed “You Don’t Mess with the Zodram.”

It is bottled at 116.32 proof, 58.16% abv. The label informs us that this is Stellum Single Barrel B7 Bourbon – Lyra. The mash bill is 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley. This has been sourced from MGP of Indiana (Midwest Grain Products of Indiana) a distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, producing spirits for private label sale. (They make great whiskey.)

Not unlike other reviews for MGP bourbons I have seen, this flavor profile just works for me. Toasted oak, corn, some much appreciated sweet stone fruit, backed by a rye spice. I’m always happy to come across MGP whiskeys.

On a related note, he Bourbonr blog has a great article about the different mash bills available from the MGP distillery.
