Glengoyne 15

Glengoyne 15 year single malt Scotch whisky. This particular line no longer is in production. Nice to see that it has only natural colors (no e150 caramel coloring has been added.) Price $55 to $65 (US)

Glengoyne 15 year

Glengoyne 15 year is a single malt Scotch whisky. What exactly does that mean?  It is Scotch whisky distilled (i) at a single distillery (ii) from water and malted barley without the addition of any other cereals, and (iii) by batch distillation in pot stills.

Americans think of this style as the classic or most authentic Scotch. However, Scots also traditionally drank whisky blends.

Glengoyne Distillery has been in operation since 1833 (a bit north of Glasgow, in Scotland.) Their whiskys are distilled in the highland region, while barreled and aged in the lowlands region.

Unlike many nearby distilleries, they don’t use peat smoke to dry their grain, but instead use warm air, so their whiskys are unpeated.

This has been “aged in both bourbon and first-fill sherry casks, with some refill cask whisky thrown in for good measure.”

Color: deep copper.  Nose: very sweet, hint of lemon, dried fruit.  Palate: A round, full mouthfeel. toffee, barley, sweet. As the ice melts it brings out the flavors.

Not as dry as some other reviewers are mentioning, which is nice. And I noted that taking a mouthfull changes the flavor experience in a great way. However, this still hasn’t converted me to enjoying single malts as much as bourbons, though.
