Fighting Cock

Michael P. Gaughan reviews Fighting Cock Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

51.5 % ABV , 103 Proof. Mash bill: Corn, barley and rye.

Fighting Cock Heaven Hill

No Age Statement (the previous version of Fighting Cock was age stated at 6 years. This expression is younger.)

Distiller: Heaven Hill Distillery, Bardsville KY.

Color: Mahogany Many Legs running slowly.

Nose: Sweet vanilla with corn in the background. An alcohol sharpness when close in, but a rich vanilla as I back off a bit. Wood spice underneath. A rich sweetness pervades.

PALATE: Silky mouthfeel on arrival. Sweet creamy notes peek out while a hot spiciness plays on my tongue. Part alcohol burn, but more wood spice. A hint of a light creamy sweetness. The mouth feel is silky and pleasant.

FINISH: Very spicy and drying, with pepper in my throat. A mixture of pepper and creamy sweetness on my tongue. A slight artificial sweet note at the end but not a big deal balanced with all the other factors.

Another exploration of the bottom shelf and this one is a winner. Love the mouthfeel. The sweet arrival is mixed well with spice.  This could be a daily sipper, and at 51.5% ABV could stand up in mixing. I was intrigued by the name and at $21 and change after taxes in New York City; it got the ticket to ride home on the subway with me. A very good bourbon IMO.

With 2 drops of water

NOSE: Vanilla sweetness subdued replaced by a light sugary sweetness.

PALATE: Still a pleasant mouthfeel, but pepper comes to the fore and surprisingly more alcohol presence. There is still a light sweetness in the background; a licorice maybe. Generally a sugary sweetness mixed with spice notes

FINISH: Spicy and drying with a lot of pepper on the tongue and mouthwatering in the end.
